KUNST.EE
New layout for magazine Kunst.ee. Kunst.ee is main Estonian magazine of visual culture (appearing since 1958, though until 2000 it was called just Kunst). Because it is actually also almost only magazine of visual arts, its content is very eclectic – it has to be at the same time the voice of art history and most edgy culture theory, museums and experimental spaces, established artists and emerging artists, theorists and practitioners. And according that every issue also includes 1 or 2 special issues, complied by quest editors. I decided to try not to hide this eclectic and fractal nature but use it as design concept. Magazine cover uses not one central image but layers of different images. Magazine layout does not use one grid system but every section has different one, which suits most to its characteristics – big and more ceremonial topics as biennials and awards have one column for text and lot of white space, theoretical texts have two columns which is most reader-friendly, running news use three columns and all space is used as much as possible etc. Magazine logo is simply written in Helvetica, because of strong symbolic status of this typeface – Helvetica has been long time the font of “universal good taste”. But it is scaled out to refer so to the keywords as “bigger than life”, “border-crossing”. “not fitting into frame”
